Earth is the first planet in the [[sol system|Sol system]] and is the terrestrial homeworld of [[humanity|Humanity]]. The surface was catastrophically damaged in [[first virtual war|The First Virtual War]] and is no longer habitable. The governing body of humanity has sinced moved to [[luna|Luna]].

During the climax of [[first virtual war|The First Virtual War]], CYNTHIA ordered a majority of the USG fleet to the Asteroid Belt. 172 medium to large asteroids were propelled towards Earth using the fleet's drives. Despite constant attack from the Virtual defense network, 51 asteroids impacted the surface, causing widespread devastation. 

During the first hour, most of the surface was destroyed by earthquakes, conflagration, or flattened by the shockwaves of the impact. Most orbital infrastructure was destroyed by debris within three hours. The remaining Virtual data centers in orbit were either digitally purged or de-orbited in the next few months. 

For the next century, the surface would remain too unstable to return to. With the atmosphere stripped away and the oceans evaporated, Earth became a lifeless, smouldering rock.
==== Reclamation ====

[[earth reclamation project|The Earth Reclamation Project]], founded in 200 AUM, is a massive, multi-trillion person project with the goal of restoring Earth to its former glory. For the next millennia, tectonic stabilization devices, climate control systems, and terraforming nanites restored 60% of the surface. While still lacking an atmosphere and any life, Earth has become a pilgrimage spot for Humans all over the galaxy.
