Setting

this article is sussy and written in short form

Local gate destroyed, system falls into anarchy as supplies dwindle. Ecumenopolis falls into disrepair as the central government loses authority and warlords rise up. Total deadzones where the climate control systems failed and are filled with toxins and mutants. Most of the population lives below the top layer, the city has multiple tiers. The ceiling of the layers have a simulated day night cycle but many have failed, plunging their section into permanent night. The top surface layer of the ecumenopolis is mostly unlivable due to the failure of the atmosphere control units, leading to unpredictable super storms and heavy radiation from space.

Before the collapse, the population of the ecumenopolis and surrounding orbitals was estimated to be a modest 10-20 trillion, with many unaccounted for in the undercity. After the collapse, without proper administrative capability to take a head count, experts estimate that there may be as few as 50 billion left. Much of the orbital infrastructure has deteriorated in a massive runaway kessler syndrome scenario thanks to the loss of most of the computing power needed to maintain so many structures.

Originally built as a frontier administration hub, the entire crust of the planet is a massive supercomputing node for CYNTHIA. As the neighboring systems developed, cities were built on top of the computing layer until the entire planet was encompassed with one giant city. The huge amount of waste heat produced by the planet is recycled into the supercomputing node at less than 1% efficiency, with the rest going off to thermal plants and eventually into the superradiance towers to keep the temperature livable. The IR signature of the ecumenopolis looks similar to the electromagnetic signature of pulsar, with two beams of heat shooting out from the poles of the planet into deep space.

Ideal climate with abundant life

  • Paradise Sectors : Maximum decadence
  • Nature Reserve Sectors : Wildlife and exotic animals living in carefully sculpted environments

Functioning infrastructure and livable climate

  • Temperate Sectors : Urban sprawl with 70-80F temperatures and clear skies
  • Summer Sectors : Summer themed sprawl with beaches and 80-90F temperature
  • Winter Sectors : Winter themed sprawl with snowfall and 30-40F temperature
  • Ultradense Sectors : Densely packed together living areas stacked on top of each other in giant arcologies
  • ICA Internet : The ICAI, while much slower than before, still acts as a virtual safe zone for AIs to inhabit
  • Vector Internet : The VI is a separate, isolated network built off of ICAI infrastructure meant exclusively for Vector usage

Massive health risks and potential catastrophic ecological collapse

  • The Loop : A massive maglev train system spanning the entire planet, many sections are nonfunctional.
  • Industrial Sectors : Automated manufacturing centers that spew out toxic byproducts
  • Undercity Sprawl : Even more dense than ultradense, most areas have no windows
  • Frozen Wastes : Winter zones that have malfunctioning climate control and have dropped down to -100F or lower
  • Rust Deserts : Summer zones with malfunctioning climate control that have cause massive corrosion and erosion damage to the structure, leading to seas of rust and shattered concrete
  • Flooded Sectors : Sectors near breached water containment tanks are mostly, if not fully submerged
  • Rust Oceans : Similar to rust deserts, but flooding has caused the water to turn a dark murky red
  • Laboratory Breach Zones : Biological/chemical research labs that have long since abandoned, eventually leading to their experiments leaking out and contaminating the sector
  • Permadark : Day/night ceiling tiles are completely destroyed, leading to permanent night

Long term life impossible

  • The Surface : Massive amounts of radiation as well as unpredictable superstorms
  • Main Grid Reactor Sectors : Quadruple redundant automated megascale fusion reactors pumping out ridiculous amounts of neutron radiation. These were dangerous to be around even before the collapse
  • Corium Tunnels : Smaller scale fission reactors that have melted down. Their corium have burned through the floor and created expansive, highly radioactive tunnels that are a dangerous means of quickly traveling between levels
  • Coolant Tundras : Broken coolant systems supporting the ecumenopolis thermal control have produced frozen wastelands where it snows antifreeze and other dangerous materials
  • Superradiant Lava Pools : The base around superradiant towers have not been maintained, leading to pools of lava and extensive damage to neighboring infrastructure
  • Supercomputing Layer : The supercomputer crust produces an incredible amount of heat as well as electromagnetic interference
